Spoon Theory

An interactive in-person session introducing Spoon Theory.

June 2024

Spoon Theory is an instructor-led course I designed for a mental-health themed brown bag session for work. My manager approached me with the idea to use our monthly in-office brown bag sessions for mental health awareness, and I thought that presenting the concept of Spoon Theory would be the best.

Although Spoon Theory was conceptualized in the context of disabilities, I believe that the theory encompasses all spectrums of health, including physical, emotional, and mental. The main objective of my brown bag session was to remind my coworkers that regardless of their health and well-being, it's important to take rests and recharge. Rest and relaxation go a long way in fostering a positive emotional and mental ecosystem for ourselves, and Spoon Theory was, to me, a good way to emphasize that.

I had a fun time presenting the brownbag to my coworkers. Two main insights from my coworkers that will stick to me. First, while Spoon Theory was contextualized in the disability sphere, it's applicable to anyone and everyone, as everyone uses up energy to do everything, so energy management is key. Second, finding alternative ways to rest and relax is key as there are different types of rest; my coworker emphasized the importance of trying to be independent from rampant media consumption as a form of rest. The media consumption part is interesting, as it's very easy to dive into our phones and just scroll away on social media, but it does not necessarily enrich the mind or provide wholesome relaxation.

I developed two outputs for this project: a session deck and a session guide. The session deck was made using Canva, with all the design assets sourced from Canva. The session guide was based on my experiences presenting the session, so it wasn't really made to support my presentation but rather showcase my skills in creating a session guide.

Overall, this was a memorable project for me and I hope you enjoy looking through my outputs!
